Cumberland Health Centre Technological Advancements
Community Counterpart: Dr. Nerissa Ramnarain
Community: Cumberland Village
PCV Group: GUY30
The purpose of this project is to provide Cumberland Health Centre (CHC) with technological enhancements in ways of a new laptop computer. Acquiring a laptop will help with CHC’s ability to create health talk presentations for, but not limited to, our biweekly Teen Pregnancy Support Group (TPSG) and community health talks, and will allow staff to utilize computer programs to better create CHC’s Expanded Programme of Immunization (EPI) Report which is presented to the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) on a quarterly basis.
Currently, the doctor in charge and the present Peace Corps Volunteer (PCV) use/share their personal laptops for the endeavors listed above. However, many issues can arise from the current procedures in place. For example,
- When the doctor and/or PCV is unavailable, the staff has to wait to move forward with these initiatives causing delays in reporting and/or a rushed presentation.
- As CHC is part of the MOPH health care system, it is best to keep professional data separate from personal use. Since CHC does not currently have a computer, it becomes an ethical dilemma in regards to privacy (both for the owner of the personal computer and CHC’s data/reports).
- When CHC staff use personal computers, there is an increased security risk. If the staff member loses his/her laptop or does not protect a laptop, the health centre could lose or unknowingly disclose important and private information.
A new laptop with updated programs will help to allow flexibility to staff members and warrant patient and staff privacy in regards to Cumberland Health Centre. This project and the laptop obtained through this grant will help to better serve the Cumberland Health Centre by providing additional training/capacity building amongst Health Centre staff in ways of technological enhancements and programming, reduce the potential out-of-pocket cost for staff in regards to possible damage to personal equipment, and ensure privacy for Cumberland Health Centre’s staff and patients.
